ImageWhile it was still a nightmare to get the results from the Gold held in Taipei this week, Indonesians had a bright day, qualifying most of their shuttlers for the quarter-finals of the event, with an expected clash between Chen Hong and Taufik. Gade was ousted by Lee Hyun Il.

It seems like 2007 will be a good year for Indonesia. After their worst performance ever in their home event, the shuttlers from PBSI are clearly waking up. In the now in progress, which was deprived of all the top Chinese players except Chen Hong, the Indonesians fared rather well, securing three spots in the quarter-final stage. Taufik Hidayat, winner over Hafiz Hashim in straight games (21/12 – 21/15) will face Chen Hong in the next round.

The two shuttlers are used to playing each other, with a clear advantage for Taufik, who has won 10 out of their 13 meetings, including one in the Japan Open last week. He’ll be joined by Simon Santoso – who beat Boonsak once again – and Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who beat Korea’s Park Sung Hwan. Korea, however, can celebrate as their former number one Lee Hyun Il is apparently back in business: the left hander beat Peter Gade 27/25 – 21/14. Lee Chong Wei also advanced to the quarter-finals.

In the men’s doubles, three Indonesian pairs secured quarter-final berths as well, while Denmark got two in, with Matthias Boe and Carsten Mogensen making a slow comeback to high level competition after Mogensen took a long hiatus due to injury.

The surprise in the ladies’ singles event saw Judith Meulendijks beat Zhou Mi, giving the Netherlands a second chance to shine in Taipei after Yao Jie made it to this stage as well.
