23 minutes. That’s not much for what was to be the most appealing match of the first round of the Hong Kong Open, on Tuesday. With matches starting a day earlier than the regular Super Series events – due to the small number of courts in the Elizabeth Stadium – this particular match, between two former top 5 players, was the best to expect.

But things turned sour for the Chinese, whose record against Taufik is a disaster. The Chinese did try to keep up in the beginning of the second game, when both came even at 11/11, but the rest of the match was a one-sided story, with many mistakes from the Chinese. The line score showed the difference of level: 21-11, 21-13.

Taufik, who looked in form for his debut in China – he skipped the China Open earlier – said he didn’t know why the Chinese didn’t play his best. “I don’t know. Ask him! Maybe he just wanted to enjoy the match between two old guys,” said the Indonesian with a laugh.

Taufik will play Korea’s Park Sung Hwan, who stunned Lin Dan last week, entering the semi-final of the China Open. In case of a victory, the Olympic Champion could be meeting Lin Dan inn the quarter-finals. Lin, meanwhile, had a smooth start with a 21-17, 21-5 win over Andrew Smith of England. In the men’s doubles, Tan and Koo secured an easy win over Denmark’s Steffensen and Andersen while Wijaya and Gunawan stunned Taipei’s Chien/Lin. Xie Xingfang had an easy match while Rasmussen struggled to beat India’s Nehwal in three games.
