China against India and Indonesia against Malaysia will be the semi-finals of the Asia Championships  after the quarter-final stage took place this Monday in the Indian city of Lucknow.

The group stage had decided on the quarter-finalists – with the top 2 teams in each group qualifying for this stage, and logic prevailed in the team event since Thailand didn’t send their best shuttlers – Ratchanok Intanon is involved in the U.S. Open and Thai Open giant-killer Busanan Ongbamrungphan did not make the trip – and Korea opted out of the competition. The Chinese, who beat Hong Kong 3-1, will take on the locals, India, who scored a perfect 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei.

The closest quarter-final saw Indonesia barely edge Japan for a final 3-2 victory, thanks to a close win in the girls’ doubles (21-18 in the deciding game). Japan had scooped the points in the singles events but Indonesia ended up with all 3 points in the doubles events. The Indonesians will meet Malaysia – led by Zulfadli Zulkiffli – who stunned Thailand 3-0.
