It was not much of a surprise in the finals of the European Badminton Championships in Vantaa, Finland, as Viktor Axelsen came out as the big winner of the boys’ singles of the individual event. The World Champion, however, took more time than he may have expected against his compatriot Rasmus Fladberg – the son of a famous figure (Steen Fladberg, famous men’s and mixed doubles player for Denmark), losing the second game 18-21 after taking the first one 21-13. But the tall blond put on the next gear to clinch the title 21-13 in the decider.

The all-Spanish final in the girls’ singles saw the favourite and top seed Carolina Marin beat Beatriz Corrales 21-14, 23-21 after a tough fight from her compatriot.

Denmark will go back home with three titles – a blessing after their loss in the team event – as Kim Astrup / Lina Kjaersfeldt and Mette Poulsen / Ditte Strunge Larsen won in mixed and girls’ doubles respectively. The last title was taken by England’s Chris Coles and Matthew Nottingham.
