One of the biggest surprises in men’s doubles so far this week happened off court as quarter-finals day began at the BCA Superseries Premier. Denmark’s world #2 Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen granted a walkover to Fu Haifeng / Zhang Nan of China, but this was much happier than a case of an injured player.

The bad news – for Danish fans and Indonesian spectators – actually involves happy news for the Danish shuttler Carsten Mogensen, who is on his way home to see his new baby, who was born Friday morning.

His girlfriend is pregnant and he got a call that’s she is in labour.  He got the first flight back to Denmark this morning.  It’s not because of injury, said Danish coach Lars Uhre.

Of course I’m happy because he’s had a baby boy,” he added, with a happy expression.

This news is, however, quite disappointing for spectators who were keen to watch the big battle between two of the world’s strongest pairs.

I’m a bit disappointed because I wanted to see this match so badly. Both pairs are great, but because there aren’t Indonesians it’s not that important, said Azizah Nadilla, one of the spectators in the Istora Senayan, Jakarta’s legendary badminton venue.

According to Lars Uhre, losing the match in this tournament is not a big problem for Boe and Mogensen because their ranking is still quite high and the points can still be pursued in upcoming tournaments.  We at Badzine wish Carsten and his girlfriend all the best on this happy day with their new little boy.
