Former badminton star Li Lingwei from China was one of four athletes to become official members of the International Olympic Commitee, as announced by a press release from Associated Press. Li Lingwei is the second athlete coming from the Badminton Fraternity, after Sir Craig Reedie from Scotland.

Former Olympic sprinter Frank Fredericks of Namibia was one of the other new members announced to have joined .

Members of the IOC represent and promote the interests of the IOC and of the Olympic Movement in their countries and in the organisations of the Olympic Movement in which they serve” (Olympic Charter 2004, page 28). There are currently 106 members, 33 honorary members and 1 honour member.
