Away from the courts for a long time because of a recurrent injury, Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia seems to be back in form with a great run in the Yonex held this week in Taiwan. The former Asian Champion stunned Hu Yun from Hong Kong before edging his compatriot Alamsayah Yunus in three tough games, 15-21, 22-20, 21-17. He and Tommy Sugiarto will fly Indonesia’s flag in the quarter-finals of the event, while Hafiz Hashim, now part of KLRC badminton club, has also made it to the same stage after a good win over Dutchman Dicky Palyama. Hashim and Dwi Kuncoro will meet in the quarters while top seed Nguyen Tien Minh faces Shon Wan Ho, winner over Simon Santoso in the round of 16.

In the women’s singles, top seed and recent runner up of the BWF Yonex World championships Cheng Shao Chieh was ousted by younger compatriot Pai Hsiao Ma.
