Beuel was not able to compensate for the absence of Anthony Clark, who missed the match due to an injury sustained at last week’s European Championships in Manchester.
Marc Zwiebler (pictured below) proved again that he plays a spectacular doubles game, winning both matches with Rajiv Ouseph. But even his two straight victories against Kestutis Navickas didn’t help his team to get the “Hans-Riegel-Pokal”, the trophy named after the Haribo company’s famous founder, who was also German champion and president of the German association in the fifties.
Winning the first men’s doubles and all the ladies’ matches with a strong Olga Konon, Bischmisheim had a 4-1-lead in both finals. Beside Dieter Domke, his teammate Marcel Reuter played an important role on Sunday. In a tough match, Marcel defeated Carl Baxter and celebrated his victory in what may well prove to have been the last third men’s singles in the German league. Next year the system is likely to change such to the one used in the Danish league, with only one match in every discipline plus a second men’s singles.
