Korean pro teams KT&G and Milyang City Hall again sent teams studded with retired veterans to the Singapore but without their national team players and with quality opposition from Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Singapore, they were unable to repeat their gold medal sweep of last autumn.

Korea got their two early.  The first was a done deal but in the all-Korean men’s singles final, Hong Seung Ki bested defending champion and former Olympic silver medallist Shon Seung Mo in two, quick games.  Yim Jae Eun was the second Korean in as many weeks to make two international finals in one day and curiously, both she and last week’s Australian Open double champion Kim Min Seo have recently changed their names.  The thirty-two-year-old Yim was known as Yim Kyung Jin when she won silver at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.  On Saturday, she was the only Korean veteran to reach the top of the podium when she and 19-year-old Lee Se Rang beat out Indonesian youngsters Jenna Gozali / Variella Aprilsasi Putri Lejarsari in straight games.

Men’s doubles featured two hot young Indonesian pairs, one of which had knocked out the top seed and the other who had taken care of the defending champions.  In the final it was the former who prevailed as Albert Saputra / Rizki Yanu Kresnayandi won 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 over Ricky Karanda Suwardi / Agripina Prima Rahmanto Pamungkas.

Singapore’s Chen Jiayuan scored one for the home team.  The nineteen-year-old dropped the first game but still outlasted 31-year-old Kwon Hee Sook 18-21, 21-16, 21-14.  In the last match of the day, Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama / Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong became the only ones to convert top seed status into a title.  They won in straight games over defending champion and former world #1 Lee Jae Jin, partneringYim Jae Eun in her second final of the day.
