The Gold is already underway in Saarbrucken, Germany, with some of the world’s best having crossed the border from France after the Yonex World Championships held in Paris last week.

Marc Zwiebler, second seed and home favourite was in for a scare when he was taken to 3 long games – 1h13 minutes by China’s Kai Wen, but other seeds weren’t that lucky. 10th seed Raul Must was shown the exit by Lu Yi. Other seeds to fall before the third round to be played on Thursday: Scott Evans, Anand Pawar, and Rune Ulsing and Christian Lind Thomsen, both from Denmark.

Chinese youngsters are in to trouble the favourites in the women’s singles draw as Liu Xin stands in the way of top seed Pi Hongyan of France as early as the second round.

The doubles events are to kick off on Thursday
