The first major tournament following the World Badminton Championships, the Yonex-Sunrise , is underway in Ho Chi Minh City.  The event actually kicked off on Monday, with men’s singles qualifying matches, then the rest of qualifying, as well as the men’s singles Round of 64, were played Tuesday.  Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei have all sent their B teams, with a few exceptions, such as Sho Sasaki, Hashimoto/Hirata, and Chen/Lin Yu Lang but the highest ranked player in the draw is once again World #7 and home-town favourite Nguyen Tien Minh, who is out to recapture the title he won in 2008 and 2009.

Already some seeded players are down as Hong Kong’s Chan Yan Kit could not handle Korean soldier Hong Ji Hoon, the 2006 World Junior Champion who has yet to make his break on the senior stage.  Also, Singapore’s Derek wong was beaten in two by Chong Wei Feng of Malaysia.
