SWISS INT’L 2012 – Domke and Gilmour on top, Lansac shines

While the crème de la crème was fighting in Odense for the Yonex Denmark Open, some fine European shuttlers had gone south, in Yverdon les Bains, Switzerland for the Swiss International – an International Challenge-rated tournament.

Germany’s Dieter Domke, third seed, was the winner of the men’s singles event, enjoying the withdrawal of the top two seeds. Poland’s Wacha was the top seed but retired in his first match against Italian Madaloni. The tall German beat England’s Toby Penty 21-14, 20-22, 21-18 in the final.

Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour proved the good state of form she is in by scooping the women’s singles title by beating Milicent Wiranto from Indonesia. The Scottish shuttler, however, didn’t have to play the semi-final as France’s jewel Delphine Lansac (photo) had to withdraw from the competition in order to catch her plane to Japan where she is due to participate in the BWF World Junior Championships. Lansac was certainly not expecting to go that far in this tournament, but the 17-year-old beat 4th seed Sabrina Jaquet in straight games in order to qualify for the semi-final.

In the men’s doubles Adam Cwalina and Pzremyslaw Wacha prevailed in spite of Wacha’s injury, while Olver/Robertshaw won the women’s doubles event and Kaesbauer and Herttrich won the mixed doubles.
