The Kumpoo Badminton Gold has kicked off in the city-state of Macau, just across the bay from Hong Kong where the last Super Series of the season took place until Sunday.

Day one was a mixture of qualification and first round in the men’s singles event, where no fewer than 5 of the top 16 seeds were sent packing, including number 2 seed Kenichi Tago. The Japanese shuttler had a tough first round against Hong Kong’s Chan Yan Kit, and the latter won 21-13, 22-20.

Kashyap Parupalli (4) retired only points after the match had started against Malaysia’s Lee Hock Hai, 3-4. Tommy Sugiarto lost to Teng Shih Hua from Chinese Taipei whileAlamysah Yunus was beaten by Indian youngster Srikanth K. The defeat of Taipei’s Hsueh was however not as surprising in the hands of China’s Qiao Bin.
