According to the Danish TV Channel Sports TV 2, former Olympic gold medallist Poul-Erik Høyer became an official member of the International Olympic Committee () on Friday morning. The Dane was officially accepted by the other members at its Congress in connection with the Winter in Sochi.  76 voted for Poul-Erik Høyer, while 12 were against.

With Høyer’s selection, the IOC now has two Danish members for the first time. Crown Prince Frederik is already a Danish representative in the committee.

Poul-Erik Høyer won gold at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 and, after his active badminton career, made a career in international sports management. In 2010 he was elected President of Badminton Europe and in May 2013 was elected as President of the Badminton World Federation. The election of Mr. Høyer as IOC member is a good news for the badminton community as it will probably reinforce its position within the Summer Olympics program.
