Singapore Open champion Yu Xiaohan has been stripped of the two silver medals she got from the World Games in Gwangju this past summer, according to a report yesterday from China’s Xinhua News Agency.  Yu apparently tested positive for the diuretic furosemide at a routine check at the in July.  Yu had been awarded silver medals in both the women’s doubles and mixed team events but according to the Xinhua report, these were taken back by the Badminton World Federation () in September. The narrow victory by Yu Xiaohan (pictured) and Ou Dongni in the Universiade women’s doubles semi-final prevented Korea’s Go Ah Ra / Yoo Hae Won from reaching the final in their hometown of Hwasun.

Yu, who has not competed internationally since the Universiade and has not played in a BWF ranking event since her Singapore Open victory, may still face additional penalties from the BWF and the Chinese Badminton Association after disciplinary procedures.  Furosemide is listed in The World Anti-Doping Code in section S5 (Diuretics and Other Masking Agents) and as such, is prohibited both in and out of competition.
