The players have given their votes to four new  members of the Athletes’ commission this Wednesday in Gold Coast during the Sudirman Cup: 3 women  and 1 man; 3 Europeans and 1 Asian. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu from India, Marc Zwiebler from Germany, Kirsty Gilmour from Scotland and Akvile Stapusaityte from Lithuania were the successful candidates.

Lithuania’s Akvilė Stapusaityte, who was actually 8th in the voting with 25, is the third woman elected to the Commission. However, she will only serve two years as she will finish the term of Tang Yuanting. The Chinese player became a member of the Athletes’ Commission in 2015 but resigned following her retirement from badminton last year, thus leaving a ‘casual vacancy’ on the Commission.

The new Athletes’ Commission members will join Shintaro Ikeda of Japan, Koen Ridder of the Netherlands, and India’s Saina Nehwal on the players’ representative body.
