The heavy rain that poured over the Lion city did not dampen the spirits of the home ground heroes. Three Singapore mixed doubles pairs did their country proud in the first round of Li Ning 2010 Super Series. All of them survived three hard-fought battles to book their spots in the next round.

The first duo to breathe hope to Singapore squad was Vanessa Neo / Hendri Kurniawan Saputra. They outshone Yoo Yeon Seong / Kim Min Jung with 21-3, 20-22, 21-14.

As if to show continue the country’s prowess over the Koreans, scratch pairing of Danny Bawa Chrisnanta / Frances Liu – who had to play two matches yesterday just to get to the main draw – upset the seventh seeded Koreans Shin Baek Cheol / Lee Hyo Jung in 21-19, 15-21, 15-21.

The Singaporeans have already shown that they had what it took to reign over the more experienced duo. “We were a bit confused in the first game. However, we knew that we still had hope as we lost in a very tight game,” said Danny. The Koreans seemed to have no answer to the unstoppable Chrisnanta/Liu. “From the second game onwards, we were able to get into our game and play rallies with them. After we won the second game, we gained a lot of confidence and thus were able to win the match in the end.

in2010-NathanI think we performed really well today. We were able to show our skills and our strategies worked. As much as possible we tried to attack the lady, and when the Baek Cheol is off his guard, I will direct the shuttle to him,” added Danny.

Another pair to be slashed by the home ground heroes was the eight-seeded Nathan Robertson (Photo) and Jenny Wallwork. This time Singapore’s Thai-Chinese combination Chayut Triyachart / Yao Lei was the one who did the trick. They won the match in 19-21, 21-13, 21-13.

We just refused to give up throughout the match,” commented Chayut.

After we lost the first game, we know that we can still fight for it,” added Yao Lei.

Chayut/Yao just clinched the silver medals in India Open Grand Prix 2010 last week. “Our performance in the India Open definitely boosted our confidence in this tournament.  We will just keep trying our best in this tournament.
