The top seed had an impressive start against Guatemala’s number one player Kevin Cordon, giving no opportunity to the world number 54 to stamp his mark on the game. Although quoted as being very tense in the lead-up to the worlds by his coach, Misbun Sidek, the world number one showed no signs of that tension as he heads towards a potential semi-final against the reigning world champion Lin Dan.

However, as usual, the top Malaysian player played close to his best, giving the crowd a glimpse of his efficient attacking play, which raised the decibel level in the stadium after Lee secured the match point. Lee Chong Wei will now face his teammate Muhammad Hafiz in a mouth-watering all-Malaysian second round, after the latter won his match easily against the Belgium prodigy, Yuhan Tan,  in straight games.
