Liu Xin took 1 hour and 41 minutes to get rid of her younger compatriot Suo Di in the qualification round of the ongoing in Shanghai. The final score shows what a terrific battle this was to enter the main draw as Liu scooped her ticket after a 23-25, 21-16, 27-25 victory, coming back from 13-18 and saving 2 match points before her success.  Suo Di must be even more bitter as her first round had been just as hard against Taipei’s Pai, whom she had beaten 22-20 in the third game.

Amongst the big names falling for this first day of competition, Korea’s Hwang Hye Youn was ousted by China’s Xia Jingyun. All qualifiers (in the MS, WS and Mixed) are from China.

Korea can still hope as Lee Hyun Il was promoted from qualifying to the main draw directly after Peter Gade withdrew from the event and will take the number one spot in the draw, opposite of Lin Dan.
