Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) received an early Christmas bonus with no less than S$1 million (US$760 000) to the national sports association, given by Dr. Stephen Riady, chairman of Overseas Union Enterprise Group and Lippo Group president.

The amount is the single largest donation from an individual for the sport in Singapore.  SBA president Lee Yi Shyan said the money will be used for developing programmes for those aged nine to 14 years as well as for the national team players and partnership programmes with schools.

The timing is rather à propos, considering that the island nation will be hosting the Singapore Youth International next week, with top youngsters from all over Asia competing, including Singapore’s Youth Olympic quarter-finalist Huang Chao and even two-time World Junior Champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.
