The Indonesian daily Kompas reported that star player Taufik Hidayat has backed out of the island nation’s team, leaving a severely weakened contingent for a nation which hasn’t won since the inaugural edition in 1989.

Taufik’s withdrawal adds to Indonesia’s woes after injuries prevented the selection of Beijing gold medallists Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan.  With the possible exception of China’s Lin Dan, virtually every men’s singles player at the Sudirman Cup was a possible if not probable victim of Taufik.  Still, world #11 Simon Santoso and India Grand Prix winner Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka are anything but pushovers and Indonesia is still a very dangerous team.
