The third day of the European Championships saw some of the expected medallists out of the tournament. 4th seed Pi Hongyan was shown the way out by Germany’s Karin Schnasse in strait games 9-21, 18-21. The French shuttler was still convalescent after her knee operation and had given it a try in Sweden. After her loss, her coach Fabrice Vallet hinted that she would skip the Super Series in India and concentrate on her preparation for the Olympic Games, which will most likely give her London seeded spot to Yao Jie.

Amongst the other casualties in Kaslrona, Sweden, Denmark’s Hans Kristian Vittinghus was also beaten by a German shuttler – Dieter Domke, 14-21, 15-21. The Dane was 3rd seed and expected to meet his compatriot Viktor Axelsen in the quarter final. The latter will look for his first medal in the European senior competition at only 18.
Pablo Abian was also sent packing

In the men’s doubles, two upsets : Denmark’s second seeds Ramsussen and Conrad Petersen were beaten by Kristiansen and Bonde, while Dutchmen Ridder/Bosch (8th seeds) were shown the exit by newcomers Labar/Queré from France

Tine Baun and Peter Gade are looking at an expected final against Juliane Schenk and Jan O Jorgensen, if logic prevails.
