The semi-finals of the ongoing Kumpoo will see an all India vs. China affair in the men’s singles event as the young guns from both these countries performed above par, including newcomer Kidambi  Srikanth from India.

The young Indian, who was born in Guntur but now trains under Gopichand in Hyderabad, had clinched his first title on the senior tour last March in the Maldives – beating on the way players like Anup Sridar, Jan Frohlich and Zulfaldi Zulkiffli – but isn’t yet known outside the South Asian sub-continent. In Macau, his run was just as impressive: a straight-game win over 9th seed Yunus from Indonesia, then in the third round he beat Malaysia veteran Wong Choong Hann in three games before nailing Hong Kong’s young star Wei Nan, 16-21, 21-19, 21-19. He will meet China’s Gao Huan in the semi-final while Gurusaidutt RMV and Chen Yuekun will fight for the other spot in the lower half of the draw.

In other events, seeds kept falling as there will be exactly the same number of unseeded players as seeded players fighting on Saturday. Taipei’s Pai Hsiao Ma will take on Busanan Ongbamrungphan from Thailand and Sun Yu and Deng Xuan will play the other semi-final of the women’s singles.

Markis Kido and Alvent Yulianto Chandra have a good shot at making it to the final even if their opponents of the day are higher ranked (Russia’s Sozonov/Ivanov), while the other semi-final will feature Shin/Yoo against Lee/Tsai.
