While the very best were fighting for the Yonex All England crowns, Portugal was welcoming some lesser-known players for their annual event held in Caldas da Rainha. No surprise in the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed, where Sandra-Maria Jensen, Sarah Thomas/Carina Turner and Elisabeth Baldauf / Roman Zirnwald secured the medals they were top seeded for. But the surprise came in the men’s events, where unseeded Japanese players took over – Rei Sato in men’s singles and the duo of Matsumaru/Okoshi in the men’s doubles.
