Singapore’s #1 women’s singles shuttler has left the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), according to a report yesterday from Today Online.  Gu’s reasons for leaving included an inability to reach the next level with the SBA training structure, as well as nagging injuries and a desire to look after her ageing parents.

Born in Jiangsu Province in China, Gu Juan first made a name for herself when she reached the final of the Asian Junior Championships in 2007.  Before her resignation, she was one to watch in the upcoming Uber Cup Finals, as she has scored victories over other such first singles counterparts as Li Xuerui, Saina Nehwal, and Tai Tzu Ying in recent years.
