India’s Arvind Bhat has announced his from competitive badminton, says a report yesterday in the Deccan Herald.  Bhat’s best international result actually came last year when he became the oldest singles player to win a Grand Prix Gold title since the tournament designation began in 2007.  His attempted defense of that title, at this year’s German Open, was to be his last appearance in a BWF ranking tournament.  Bhat’s record was surpassed recently when Lee Hyun Il won the New Zealand Open at 35.

Bhat told the Herald that he is already on a panel of coaches for India’s senior national team but that after retiring he hopes to devote more time to coaching young players at the White Peacock, an academy he founded with Shivaprakash 10 years ago but for which he has played more of an advisory role up until now.
