On the eve of the third edition of the , the unhappy news came that several top singles seeds had withdrawn at the last minute.  2015 champion Lin Dan, 2016 runner-up Viktor Axelsen, and Carolina Marin, who was runner-up and then champion, were among the highest-profile players who will not appear in Sydney this week as expected.  Men’s singles was especially hard-hit, as Indonesia Open runner-up Jan Jorgensen will also not journey southward, nor will Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto, India’s Ajay Jayaram, nor Marc Zwiebler of Germany.

Marin is the only no-show from the women’s singles main draw and doubles was mostly spared, except for women’s doubles, where 2014 champions Tian Qing / Zhao Yunlei, and world #7 Luo Ying / Luo Yu will be absent.  Mixed doubles will be absent Indonesia Open champions Xu Chen / Ma Jin.
