The Korean badminton community today mourns the passing of two-time All England champion .  The 35-year-old died of a heart attack this morning at his home near Suwon, said a report today in the Korean sport paper Sports Hankook.

Jung Jae Sung is best known for his more than 6-year men’s doubles partnership with Lee Yong Dae, with whom he won two All England titles, three Korea Open titles, Olympic bronze, and two Asian Games bronze medals.  His first big break came when he and Lee Jae Jin beat the reigning Olympic silver then gold medallists as they won two straight national titles in 2003 and 2004.  He finished his career with a total of 18 titles, 7 Grand Prix and Grand Prix Gold titles, and one Asian Championship.

Jung Jae Sung retired from international badminton immediately following his bronze medal performance at the 2012 Olympics but continued to play for the Samsung Electromechanics Badminton Team professionally inside Korea.  He spent several years as a playing coach for Samsung and last year, he went from playing in the final of the Spring Championships, helping clinch the national title for his team, to being hired as the Head Coach after resigning a post as men’s doubles coach for the Korean National Badminton Team.

In September 2006, Jung Jae Sung was the first player ever interviewed for this webzine and in 2013, he shared with Badzine some of his memories from his first All England and from his two victories there.  At the press conference following his victory at the Korea Open in 2011, Jung Jae Sung announced his plans to marry Choi Ah Ram, a former elite badminton player to whom he was introduced by a former Samsung team-mate and he is survived by Choi and their two children.

We at Badzine send our condolences to Choi Ah Ram and to all of Jung Jae Sung’s family and close friends.
